The orchestra is put though the paces with the first subject and returns to the new subject of the previous example.  The first audiences, using Mozart and Haydn as a road map, were surely lost by this point.  The development exceeded anything they had ever experienced and the with introduction of a new subject they must have been wondering when and how the recapitulation would come.  That said, the development has been built around three very simple subjects with each iteration being unique and inspired.
