Just when it seems calm may return, the orchestra ascends to a level of sublime pathos bringing the fugue to a climax as the strings intone a series of organ like chords.  The deepfelt sorrow fades as we are seemingly awoken, briefly, to the reality of the procession.  The calm is short-lived though as the violins become ominously suspended on A.
