The trio section of a minuet, as the name implies, was often played by three instruments, frequently woodwinds.  As we can see, the Trio in the Eroica's Scherzo, with its three horns, bears no resemblance to its dainty namesake.  This phrase has been compared to a hunting call, Seigfreid's horn and a call and answer.
