In variation 7 Beethoven revisits the fugue, now more energized. The fugue subject is, as before, the bass contra-dance, this time inverted. He also includes the treble theme, shifted by a beat making it syncopated (bar 292). In example 14b, we can hear the inverted fugue subject (cellos) against the syncopated treble contra-dance (flutes). Click here |
